Some friends and I were out for a walk this morning and spotted this old Ethan Allen gossip bench in a neighbor's trash pile. Admittedly, I didn't know that it was a gossip bench until a neighbor saw me working on it and told me what it was. The table is for a phone, hence "gossip bench." Apparently these became popular after WWII.
This one needed a little love -- a few joints needed to be re-glued and some screws needed to be replaced. I filled the routed butt-print (for lack of a better term) with wood filler. I'm not into seeing anything resembling a butt-print on my furniture. I've sanded it down a bit and think I'll end up spray painting it butter yellow and probably making an upholstered cushion for the seat.
